What Does “596 × 1196mm Panel Format” Mean — and Why Is It the Standard?

When architects specify a 600×1200 ceiling tile, they are specifying a nominal grid size — not the actual panel dimensions. The panel itself is always slightly smaller than the grid opening, to allow it to drop in and rest on the grid flanges without binding. For VEIL, the actual panel size is 596 × 1196mm (688.5mm outer width). This post explains what that means and why the sizing is correct.

What is the difference between nominal and actual panel size?

A 600×1200 metric ceiling grid has a module of 600mm × 1200mm. The grid rails define a rectangular opening of 595–596mm × 1195–1196mm (the exact clearance depends on the specific grid system). A panel specified at the nominal 600×1200 would be too large to fit the opening. The panel needs to be slightly smaller.

The VEIL panel at 596 × 1196mm is sized to fit the actual opening of a standard 600×1200 grid — with the correct clearance to drop in without binding and without excessive movement. This is standard practice for all lay-in ceiling tiles.

What is the 688.5mm outer width?

The 688.5mm outer width is the dimension of the VEIL panel including its frame flanges — the parts of the panel that rest on the grid rails. The panel face (the perforated area) is 596 × 1196mm. The overall outer dimension including flanges is 688.5mm at the wider end.

This outer dimension is important for contractors checking grid compatibility. The flanges of the panel sit on top of the grid rails. The outer width determines how much of the rail is covered. For standard DONN and equivalent grids, the VEIL flange geometry is compatible.

Does the same panel format work for imperial grids?

Yes. The VEIL 596 × 1196mm panel is also compatible with 2’×4′ (24×48 inch) imperial ceiling grids used in North American commercial construction. The nominal imperial module is 609.6mm × 1219.2mm (24×48 inches). The clearance between the 596 × 1196mm VEIL panel and the imperial grid opening is within the standard tolerance range.

VEIL is compatible with both 600×1200 metric and 2’×4′ imperial grid systems as standard. No metric-to-imperial conversion required. The same panel. The same install. The simple part is yours.
